What to Expect on a Night Snorkel with Manta Rays in Kona

Night Snorkel with Manta Rays in Kona

Embarking on a night snorkel with manta rays in Kona is an unforgettable experience – one that combines adventure, natural wonder, and a deep connection with these gentle giants. Here’s what guests can expect when joining Iruka Hawaii for this captivating evening adventure.

Harbor Departure & Safety Briefing

Your night snorkel with manta rays in Kona begins with departure from Honokohau Harbor just before sunset. Onboard Iruka Hawaii’s speedboat, KIBOU, guests are greeted with safety instructions. As the boat starts off along the coast, the knowledgeable crew share a cultural and ecological introduction to manta rays and their ocean environment.

Gear Up & Head to the Manta Lights

As the sun disappears, you’ll be instructed to put on your wetsuit and prepare your snorkel gear. A short cruise (typically 5–15 minutes) brings you to a site known for rich plankton blooms, illuminated by submerged spotlights affectionately called “campfires.” They’re not actually fires, though. They are spotlights set up at the bottom of the ocean to provide a shaft of light that attracts phytoplankton: the manta ray’s food source. This, in turn, attracts the manta rays.

Into the Water: Raft Positioning & Floating

Guests enter the water one-by-one and raft together on a floating platform outfitted with lights, where lifeguard-certified guides assist . To avoid disturbing the rays, you’ll float horizontally, legs behind you, face down. It’s relaxing, non-strenuous snorkeling suited for all skill levels.

If you are new to snorkeling, breathing through the tube might take a little getting used to. We recommend putting the snorkel mask on fully and snorkel in your mouth before entering the water so that you can practice through the tube. Be sure to brush away any hair so that the mask seals to your skin. While in the water, you can keep your gaze fixed below and just enjoy the view!

Encountering the Gentle Giants

Watch as manta rays glide through the illuminated ocean water beneath you. Manta rays are big! These reef mantas (Mobula alfredi) can span up to 14 feet wide.

But rest assured manta rays are completely harmless gentle giants. Their graceful filtering of plankton through gill slits may look like a mouth, but plankton are the only things they eat. Their graceful barrel rolls and feeding movements are mesmerizing.

Back to the Boat & Warm-Up Session

After up to 45 minutes in the water, you’ll be guided back to KIBOU. It is a little chilly at night when taking off the wetsuit, so Iruka Hawaii treats guests to hot cocoa and tea, plus snacks and warm conversation as you cruise back under the stars. It’s a gentle end to a thrilling evening.
